Joseph Papp Public Theater
New York, New York

The Public, as it is widely known, was founded as The Shakespeare Workshop in 1954 by Joseph Papp, with the intention of showcasing the works of up-and-coming playwrights and performers. The Workshop has lived in this landmarked neo-Renaissance structure built in 1854 as the Astor Library.
