The University of Pennsylvania recently renovated the former West Philadelphia Title and Trust Building at 36th and Walnut to serve as the Perelman Center for Political Science and Economics. The original building, dating to 1925, was restored and an addition was constructed to accommodate its new use.
BCA was brought in to assist with the cleaning of the light-colored brickwork and developing recommendations to address stone conditions at the former Walnut Street entrance. BCA performed cleaning tests on representative areas to determine the most effective cleaning method for the dark staining and made recommendations for executing the cleaning on select areas. The former entrance exhibited displaced panels, areas of loss, and cracking. BCA performed a site visit to assess conditions and determine how to clean and stabilize the stone while retaining the historic materials. BCA worked with the contractor during implementation of the recommendations.
